A Rare Case of Pancolonic Ischemia Complicated by Fusobacterium Necrophorum Bacteremia: A Review of Colonic Ischemia for Internists

The varied clinical presentation and objective findings associated with colonic ischemia (CI) overlap multiple disease processes. A high index of suspicion is critical for timely diagnosis prognostication to avoid delays in treatment. We present a case that highlights the challenges diagnosing CI morbidity severe disease. Case report: sixty-four-year-old female presented our community hospital acute onset abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, complicated by septic shock. She was initially given infectious colitis until colonoscopy performed revealing extensive pancolonic ulcerations. Histopathological features on biopsy were most consistent ischemia. Blood cultures grew Fusobacterium Necrophorum. Surgery avoided due mortality performing total colectomy ileostomy. patient continued struggle hematochezia, continuous CI, leading recurrent hospitalizations.
